A pair of seniors, Bambi Carson and LaBoris Bean, will lead 11 other Sooners to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week.

Competition begins on Wednesday, May 30, and will continue through Saturday at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. The Sooners have 13 student-athletes traveling to Eugene and those student-athletes are scheduled to compete in 13 events. That total number of competitors and events mark the highest number in the four-year tenure of Sooner co-head coaches Jill Lancaster and Rodney Price.

Carson was an automatic qualifier in the discus with her Big 12-winning toss of 179-7. She ranks sixth in the field entering the competition. She also will compete in the shot put as the 10th-ranked competitor. Bean is ranked 11th in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and will run the anchor leg on OU's fifth-ranked 1600-meter relay.

Joining Bean on that relay will be Raoul Harvey, Ernest Lewis and Aldwyn Sappleton. Joey Scott will travel as the alternate.

Other Sooner qualifiers (with rank entering competition) include Michael Westlund (seventh), Mike McNamara (16th) and Robin Hanna (17th) in the men's pole vault, Leslie Dunlap (12th) in the women's pole vault, Justin Conkling (10th) in the decathlon, Jimyria Hicks (11th) in the 200, Alesha Peel (12th) in the 100-meter hurdles, and Janel Hayes (18th) in the long jump.

Carson (shot put), Westlund (pole vault) and Peel (60-meter hurdles) earned NCAA All-America honors during the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March.
