NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, ranked first in the Preseason Coaches' Poll, will be competing on Saturday against familiar foes. Head Coach Mark Williams and assistant coaches Xiao Yuan and Guard Young have divided the squad into a red team and a white team, and the intrasquad will give the coaches a glimpse as to how the team will compete in a competitive setting. The Red-White Intrasquad meet will take place at 1 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 8 at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.
The red team will be captained by senior David Johnston and junior Daniel Furney, and will be comprised of junior John Payton, sophomores Jock Stevens and Brian Trause, and freshmen Josh Gore, Michael Gehart and Charlie Ellis.
Senior Everette Bierker will serve as captain for the white team and will be joined by seniors Ryan Hillyer and Jim Lovelady, juniors Josh Landis, Brett Covey and Shannon Carrion, and sophomores Quinn Rowell, Heath Mueller and David Iammatteo
Four judges will be present at the intrasquad meet and individual and team scores will be kept. The event is free and open to the public. The Viersen Center is located directly across Imhoff Road from Lloyd Noble Center.
"This is the beginning of our season and the start of our team selection," said Williams. "This will give us a chance to get ready for competition and get a feel for where our team is right now. We'll get to work with the judges to make sure our difficulties and skills are where we want them to be and we'll get to see our new freshmen in collegiate competition."
OU's first meet of the season will come on Jan. 20, 2002, when Iowa and Air Force visit Norman. Nationally ranked teams such as Michigan, Nebraska, Stanford and Minnesota will all compete at OU this season and the NCAA Championships will be held at the Lloyd Noble Center on April 4-6, 2002.
