Shump Wins Shot Put Title at Tyson

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Oklahoma redshirt junior Karen Shump won the women's shot put championship, throwing her season-best mark of 54 feet, one inch on her fifth attempt Friday afternoon at the Tyson Invitational. Teammate Bailey Wagner led through four attempts and finished second with a collegiate best mark of 53-0. Wagner's collegiate best moved her up to fifth on the all-time list and was one of six personal records on the day for Oklahoma.

Tyson Invitational Day One Results

Shawna Anderson finished fifth in the women's 60-meter dash final with a season-best time of 7.39. Anderson also ran 7.39 in the semifinal and 7.47 in the preliminary round to qualify for the event. Sherine Wells qualified for the semifinal with a 7.49 prelim time. She ran 7.48 in the semifinal.

In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Malcolm Anderson finished third in the 60-meter hurdles semifinals with a collegiate best time of 7.74. The mark replaces Anderson's previous best as the third fastest time in program history. He competes in the event's final Saturday evening at 6:55 p.m. CT as a part of the USATF Classic. Nathaniel Winfrey (8.25) and Matt Wicks (8.35) did not advance out of the prelims.

Jacy Bennett set a new personal best in the women's pole vault, clearing 12-3.75 to finish seventh. Bennett's jump is the eighth best in school history, replacing her previous collegiate best on the list.

Oklahoma's women finished third in the distance medley relay. Molly Ferguson, Shakeeri Cole, Natalie Crain and Kelly Waters combined to cross the line in 11:51.93.

OU's quarter milers set new collegiate bests in the men's event on Friday afternoon. Jamel Wood (47.34) and Ethan Baker (48.14) were third in each of their heats of the timed final. Shelleyeka Rolle also competed in the women's 400-meter dash, finishing in 55.72.

Landon Sharp matched his season-best at 6-7 to take fifth in the men's high jump. Sharp cleared on his first attempt at the 6-5 opening height and cleared his final mark on his second attempt. Claire McConnell cleared 5-4.25 to finish 11th in the women's high jump.

Whitney Johnson was OU's top finisher in the women's long jump with a season-best leap of 18-0.75. Alisa Jenkins' best attempt was 17-0.75. Conrad Aaron took seventh in the men's shot put with a mark of 53-6.25 on his fourth attempt.

Evan Pierson (6.94) and Marcus Anderson (7.01) competed in the men's 60-meter dash preliminaries but neither advanced to the semifinals. Claire McConnell set a new personal best in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86. Alisa Jenkins also competed in the event, finishing in 8.96 but neither advanced to the semifinals.

In other Friday action, Jessica Engel competed in the women’s invitational 5,000-meter run at the FloTrack Husky Classic in Seattle. Engel crossed the line in 16:25.53.
