NORMAN, Okla. -- The OU Athletics Department has announced the start of its three-part men's basketball marketing campaign with an initial 30-second television spot titled "Basketball: Part I, by Jeff Capel." The spot can be viewed in the player to the right.
Charlie Taylor, OU's assistant athletics director for marketing, said his office sat down with Capel, the Sooners' fifth-year head coach, over the summer to identify a message for the upcoming season. Taylor says Capel wanted that message to center around five or six of the head coach's primary values that tell the story of OU basketball.
"As we roll out this campaign," said Taylor, "fans will see in this first spot a message about toughness, competitiveness, leadership, discipline and a couple of other traits that come from Coach Capel and are known to be inherent with Sooner Basketball."
The campaign also incorporates a number of former standout OU players, including Alvan Adams, Kevin Bookout, Harvey Grant, Blake Griffin, Hollis Price and many others.
Taylor says part two of the campaign, which will be unveiled later this week here at SoonerSports.com, revolves around the passion of fans at Lloyd Noble Center. Part three touches on the program's tradition.
An additional 30-second spot that is scheduled to begin airing near the end of October or the beginning of November features guard Cade Davis back in his childhood towns of Sayre and Elk City, Okla.
Said Taylor, "We reflect back on everything that built Cade and helped prepare him for this, his senior season at the University of Oklahoma. I think it will be very well received."
The Sooners begin their 17-game home 2010-11 season at Lloyd Noble Center on Nov. 2 with an exhibition contest against Northern State. They open the regular season with three straight home games: Nov. 12 versus Coppin State, Nov. 15 against North Carolina Central and Nov. 18 versus Texas Southern.
