NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma Men's Golf team begins the 2002 spring season with high hopes of building on the numerous successes of last year's NCAA-qualifying team.

The Sooners start off their spring season on Feb. 13 at the Taylor Made Waikoloa Collegiate in Hilo, Hawaii. Of the 21 schools competing, OU will be one of seven ranked schools at the tournament. First round action is set to start at 6:45 A.M. Hawaii time (10:45 CST) at the Kings Golf Course.

It turned out to be a battle against the elements for the Sooners in last year's trip to the islands. OU fought its way from 11th place to a tie for fifth overall.

Cody Freeman led the way for OU firing a final-round 68 and a total score of 222 (+9) good for sixth place.

The second stop for the Sooner men's golf team this spring will be at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Feb. 24 in what is sure to be a competitive tournament as four of the 13 teams competing are ranked in the top six in the nation.

Last year in Puerto Rico, Freeman continued to shine as he led OU for the second-straight tournament finishing at even par (216). As a team, the Sooners pushed their way into the top five for the fifth time of the season finishing fifth.

This year, first round tee times begin at 8 A.M. Puerto Rico time (6 A.M. CST) at the Rio Mar Country Club.
