LAS VEGAS, Nev. For the second time this weekend, the No. 12 Oklahoma softball team rallied in the seventh inning to beat Long Beach State, 2-1, on Sunday at the UNLV Alexis Resort Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. It marked the fourth consecutive win for the Sooners as they now own a 4-1 record on the season.
Junior Amber Spaulding’s walk-off two RBI triple gave the Sooners their first lead of the game and sent Oklahoma home with a win. The right fielder had a tremendous day at the plate where she went three-for-three from the plate, which contributed to Oklahoma’s six-hit total on the night.
“I was very proud of our team today,” head coach Patty Gasso, a Long Beach State alum, said. “Prior to the seventh inning, I told our girls that nothing mattered up to this point and we had a chance to go out and win it. Amber Spaulding had a great day at the plate and I’m extremely proud of her progress this season and that she was able to hit the game-winner for us.”
The seventh inning rally was started by sophomore Savannah Long who had the game-winning hit in Oklahoma’s come-from-behind victory against Kentucky Friday night. The second baseman singled to left field which was followed by a hard hit single to the third baseman by freshman Jessica Legendre. Both singles set up Spaulding for the game winner.
Long Beach State took the 1-0 lead after LBSU’s Tiffanie Wedell singled and stole second base in the third inning. The 49ers Michelle Turner singled through the right side of the infield to score Wedell, but it would be the only score for the 49ers during the game.
Senior Nicole Denes pitched a complete game and held Long Beach State to one run on only three hits while striking out four batters. Denes earned her first win of the season.
“Nicole did a great job of hanging in there today when we couldn’t get anything going offensively,” Gasso said. “Nicole earned every part of that win and I’m glad her teammates could come through to give it to her.”
OU will return home for its home opener this Wednesday against Central Arkansas. The Sooners will play a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the OU Softball Complex.
