NORMAN, Okla. -- The Sooner baseball team completed its sixth intraquad scrimmage on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners will complete their second full week of practice on Sunday with another intrasquad scrimmage at 2 p.m. in Norman. All practices and scrimmages are free and open to the public.
Senior Jon Shackelford shined on Saturday with a 3-for-5 performance that included six RBI on a home run and a double."I am extremely pleased with the way we are going about our business so far in the fall," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. "Today was a perfect example of how well we are hitting the ball. Jon is just one of the many players that have been making great contact in these two weeks of action."
The Sooners opened fall practice on Sept. 4 with 14 newcomers and welcomed back 22 members off a 2005 squad which went 35-26 overall and 14-13 in Big 12 Conference play, finished fifth in the league and made an appearance for the second consecutive year at the NCAA Tournament.
"This has been the best set of scrimmages I can remember in my seven years at OU," added Golloway. We have 12 seniors and the leadership that they have displayed, along with the depth of this team, have made for some extremely competitive practices and scrimmages.
"Individually, some outstanding performances have come from Joe Dunigan, Aaron Reza, Freddy Rodrigiuez, Ryan Rohlinger and Chuckie Caufield. Those individuals have really displayed some outstanding offensive and defensive ability."
On the mound, a trio of seniors, who came to OU from junior colleges over a year ago, have made impressive improvements.
"P.J. Sandoval continues to impress in the fall with his poise and increased velocity on his fastball," said Golloway. "John Brownell and Steven Guerra have both pitched extremely well, building off the stellar seasons they had over the summer. Its amazing what a difference a year will make, but some times junior college pitchers need a year of experience to adjust to DI baseball, especially in the Big 12."
The Sooners still have two weeks of practice remaining in the fall schedule and below is a complete look at what is ahead in that time. All practices and scrimmages are free and open to the public at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Stay tuned to SoonerSports.com for further updates.
