Men's Tennis to Host ORU on Wednesday

This Week in Sooner Tennis
The Oklahoma Sooner men’s tennis team stays at home this week for a pair of matches with two regional opponents. Wednesday afternoon the Sooners will take on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, at 2 p.m. Oklahoma will continue action in Norman to take on Wichita State on Sunday, March 13 at 12 p.m.

The Sooners enter the match against ORU with a record of 9-0, while the Golden Eagles have a season mark of 3-9. The Shockers faced ORU on February 25,  when WSU defeated ORU 5-2. The Shockers currently own a 2-3 spring record.

Last Time Against ORU
Oklahoma last faced regional opponent ORU in February at the Tulsa Southern Hills Raquet Club in Tulsa, Okla. The Sooners defeated the Golden Eagles 6-1. OU won two of the three doubles positions to earn the doubles point and five of the six singles positions.

Since 2000 Oklahoma has dominated Oral Roberts, winning all nine matches by a combined score of 55-6. OU has not lost to ORU under the helm of head coach Paul Lockwood. The Sooners enter Wednesday’s dual looking to claim a 19th consecutive win over the Golden Eagles. OU has not lost a dual against ORU since 1987.

Last Time Against WSU
The two programs last met in 2003 resulting in a 6-1 loss for the Sooners. Oklahoma owns a 12-4 series record against Wichita State while under the helm of head coach Paul Lockwood.

Navy Recap
Oklahoma swept Navy, 7-0, at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman on Saturday, March 5.  The Sooners came out firing, getting on the scoreboard first by winning the doubles point. In singles action, OU overpowered the Navy netters and won at all six positions.

Undefeated Sooners
Three Sooners are undefeated in singles play. Seniors Ondrej Fukala and Silviu Tanasoiu are 7-0 on the season, while Freshmen Ryan Thomas is 3-0. In doubles play, Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison have a perfect record of 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.

Recent Sooner Success
In three of OU’s six singles positions the Sooners are a flawless 9-0. The team also sports a 10-2 singles record when facing opponents from Region V. The Sooners are 38-7 in singles and 18-6 in doubles for the spring season.

Sooners Find Doubles Success
Oklahoma has not lost a doubles point this season. At the No. 1 spot the duo of senior Ondrej Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison own a flawless 6-0 record, while the pair of senior Silviu Tanasoiu and sophomore Marek Velicka have a spring record of 7-1 at the No. 2 position.  Junior Alexei Ivanov and freshman Ryan Thomas have teamed up to earn a stellar spring record of 6-1.
 
Sooners Back In The National Rankings
According to the most recent ITA rankings, two Sooners are ranked among the nation’s top 100 players. Junior Alexei Ivanov ranks 80th and sophomore Marek Velicka ranks 85th.

Head Coach Paul Lockwood
Paul Lockwood begins his 18th season as Oklahoma head men’s tennis coach. The OU graduate has compiled an overall record of 251-160 and claimed the Big Eight Conference title in 1992. Lockwood was named Big Eight Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1992. Lockwood’s teams have also earned eight Academic ITA All-America team honors.
