NORMAN, Okla. - The eighth-seeded University of Oklahoma women's tennis team was overpowered this afternoon by ninth-seeded Colorado, 5-2, in the opening match of the Big 12 Conference Tournament at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. The Sooners, who managed to win at the No. 1 and No. 6 singles spots, finished their season with a 12-11 overall record.

Jessica Garrow handed OU's Viviana Mracnova a victory at the top spot by retiring from the match in the second set. Garrow led Mracnova, 5-7, 2-3, before withdrawing. Mracnova improved her overall singles record to 16-12. At the No. 6 position, freshman Joni Helleland whizzed past CU's Mara Berzins, 6-0, 6-3, for her 10th win of the season.

The duo of Mracnova and Angela Stroup entered the tournament as the 2000 All-Big 12 No.1 Doubles team. The pair was riding a seven-match Big 12 Conference winning streak but that was halted by Berzins and Nadine Kenzelmann, 8-6. The win at the No. 1 doubles for Colorado ended the match as CU's overall record jumped to 7-10.

"It was a close one. Colorado won the close matches today. When two even teams like us play, you have to win the close matches to get the victory," said OU Head Coach Mark Johnson.
