NORMAN, Okla. – The 32nd-ranked University of Oklahoma women’s tennis team defeated Iowa, 5-2, Saturday in the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion to snap its three-match losing streak.

Oklahoma (5-4) took the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point for the first time in three matches, and followed with three straight-set wins in singles to beat the Hawkeyes.

“We kind of just continued the theme of year today,” OU head coach David Mullins said. “We’re not all showing up on the same day.  We’re just not all there.  From one day to the next, I don’t know who is going to give us a chance.  Fortunately, we were able to get five points on the board today but I’m not necessarily thrilled about it because we weren’t where we needed to be at nine spots.”

OU’s Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie, ranked No. 30 nationally, defeated Sonja Molnar and Shelby Talcott at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-4.  Huet and Ritchie improved to 7-2 this season with the win after losing their last two straight matches.

Mia Lancaster and Nicole Long clinched the doubles point win for the Sooners after defeating Katie Zordani and Ally Majercik of Iowa at the No. 3 position, 8-4.

Ritchie extended OU’s lead to 2-0 by winning the first singles point of the day.  Ritchie defeated Talcott at the No. 2 spot in straight sets, giving up just one game over two sets, 6-0, 6-1.

After giving up four games in the first set, Mia Lancaster shutout Iowa’s Morven McCulloch in the second set to give the Sooners a 3-0 lead over the Hawkeyes with her win at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-0.

Iowa’s Sonja Molnar defeated Huet at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-4, to cut the Sooners’ lead to 3-1.

OU responded with its fourth dual point to clinch the win after Whitney Wofford defeated Ellen Silver of Iowa, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 6 spot.

Iowa won the next point at the No. 5 spot as Katie Zordani defeated Nicole Long, 6-4, 6-4, while the final match at the No. 4 spot went to a super tiebreaker.

OU’s Abbi Melrose won the super tiebreaker at the No. 4 spot to claim OU’s fifth dual point, defeating Iowa’s Christina Harazin, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5).

“I’m hoping we get outside tomorrow, I think we’re a better outdoor team,” Mullins said. “Our tennis in L.A. a few weeks ago was a lot better than it has been indoors.  I think that might be a factor, we’re just more comfortable out there and hopefully believe in ourselves a bit more outdoors.”

The Sooners will play their second match in as many days, Sunday, Feb. 18 against TCU starting at noon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
