NORMAN, Okla. -- Senior goalkeeper Jenny Nichols (defensive) and freshman forward Whitney Palmer (newcomer) collected two of the three Big 12 weekly awards announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Baylor's Meghan Sherrell was named the league's top offensive player.
Nichols was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after allowing one goal at William and Mary on Friday and shutting out Virginia Commonwealth in 110 minutes on Sunday. Nichols has been named the conference's defensive player of the week on two other occasions (Sept. 12, 2006, and Aug. 29, 2005).
Palmer, who collected her first such conference honor, was named the Big 12's Newcomer of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal on Friday to end William and Mary's 17-game unbeaten streak at home. Palmer leads the Sooners with four goals and eight points.
The Plano, Texas, native has started every game for OU and leads the Big 12 in game-winning goals (3) and is tied for the conference lead in goals scored.
The Sooners (3-0-1) will return to action this weekend on the road to battle Long Beach State (Sept. 14) and Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 16).
