NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's soccer team held its own in a 3-1 loss to fourth-ranked Nebraska this evening in front of 221 fans at the Norman North High School Soccer Complex. The Huskers outshot the Sooners by a 23-5 count, but led in shots on goal by just a 5-4 margin. Nebraska captured the 1999 Big 12 regular season title with the victory.
Nebraska wasted little time in building a 2-0 lead as Becky Preston and Meghan Anderson netted goals in the eighth and ninth minutes, respectively. Christine Latham added a score in the 26th minute, but the Sooner defense did not allow a goal over the game's final 62-plus minutes. The Huskers were averaging nearly four goals per game entering the evening.
Oklahoma's Shannon Wing took a pass from Megan Olsen and one-timed it over the head of Nebraska keeper Karina LeBlanc in the 27th minute for the Sooners' lone score. It was the second goal of the redshirt-freshman's career (she scored OU's lone goal versus Baylor last Friday).
"This game gave us confidence," said OU Head Coach Randy Evans following the contest. "We went toe-to-toe the fourth-ranked team in the country and never backed down. We were basically playing for pride and I was proud of our effort. Teams are built on attitude and work rate and we're headed in the right direction."
Freshman goalkeeper Jana Cunningham made the start for OU tonight and gave up all three goals before being replaced by Ayn Toppin at halftime. Toppin made two saves.
Nebraska improved to 15-1-1 overall and 8-0 in the Big 12 with its triumph while Oklahoma fell to 2-13-1 and 1-8. The Sooners conclude their home season Sunday against Iowa State at 1 p.m. It will be the last time seniors Natalie Hixson and Ashlee Richmond suit up as Sooners in Norman. OU's final game of the season is Sunday, Oct. 31 at Arkansas.
