NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 25-ranked Oklahoma women’s tennis team opens its 2012 season Saturday as the Sooners host a doubleheader at the Headington Family Tennis Center beginning at 9:30 a.m. against Drake, followed by Arkansas-Little Rock at 1:30 p.m.

OU’s No. 25 preseason ranking is the highest season start in school history, OU’s previous best was in 2005 when the Sooners started the season ranked No. 26.

Sooners’ double tandem of Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie start the season ranked No. 22 nationally in doubles in the ITA top 75. The duo won the ITA Central Regional Championship on Oct. 24 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships before losing to Duke’s Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfield, 9-7.

The Sooners enter 2012 following their second consecutive NCAA appearance last season. OU finished the season with the fourth-most wins in program history after advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the third time in school history.

OU returns Huet, Ritchie and Mia Lancaster from its 2011 lineup and adds blue chip recruit Nicole Long, sophomore transfer Whitney Wofford and mid-year enrollee Abbi Melrose.

OU finished third in the Big 12 in the 2011 season, its highest conference standing since 2004 when OU also finished third. The Sooners reached the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament for just the fourth time in history.

Admission is free for all OU women’s tennis home events.
