NORMAN, Okla. - Cyclone midfielder Kelly Burke knocked in the loose ball off a free kick in the second overtime as Iowa State upended Oklahoma, 2-1, at the ISU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
Oklahoma falls to 9-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Big 12. Iowa State improves to 5-5-1 and 2-2-0 in the Big 12.
The Cyclones scored early in just the ninth minute of the game on a cross from Nikki Gamble to freshman Amy Flores. Both teams took four shots in the first half but ISU took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Sooners fired away at the ISU box in the second half, taking 11 shots while holding the Cyclones to two. OU finally scored in the 68th minute when freshman Jenny Jones (Argyle, Texas) headed a corner kick to freshman Heidi Kohlbacher (Edmond, Okla.), who put it away for the goal. Kohlbacher would finish the game with four shots and tie freshman Becky Nelson (Tulsa, Okla.) for the team lead in attempts at a score.
The game remained deadlocked, 1-1, until Iowa State's Burke scored on the rebound off the free kick in the second overtime period.
The double-overtime game was the first time this season the Sooners didn't have a game decided at the end of regulation. But it wasn't a surprise it came against the Cyclones.
Dating back to 1999, the last four Iowa State-Oklahoma matchups have gone into overtime, with the last three going to a second extra period. Iowa State improves its all-time record to 5-1-1 against Oklahoma, which includes a 4-0 advantage in Ames.
OU goalkeeper Catherine Wade (Midland, Texas) finished with four saves and two goals allowed over 104:15 in the box. Both Lauren MacIver (Tulsa, Okla.) and Shannon Wing (Broken Arrow, Okla.) had three shots while Logan Womack (Norman, Okla.) had two for the game.
The Sooners return home to host Big 12 rival Missouri on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at John Crain Field. OU is undefeated at home this season and boasts a seven-game winning streak in Norman dating back to last season.
