NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Oklahoma women’s tennis head coach David Mullins and assistant coach Brook Connelly advanced to the mixed doubles quarterfinals of the 2011 US Open National Playoffs Wednesday after defeating Jill Saunders and Kris Shumway, 6-1, 6-0.
With the win, the coaches move on to play Michaela Kissell and Jacob Eddins in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 11 a.m. CT.
“It was so much fun playing this evening,” Mullins said. “We played pretty well and it was great preparation for the rest of the event.”
Mullins and Connelly won their fifth straight match in straight sets with the victory over Saunders and Shumway.
“Brook was ready to play and was unstoppable,” Mullins added.
The OU coaches gave up the fewest games out of the playoffs’ six matches Wednesday. Mullins and Connelly gave up just one game total over two sets, the only duo to give up fewer than eight on the day.
Kissell and Eddins were the USTA Midwest Runners-Up. Kissell was the 2011 ITA Atlantic Region Senior of the Year while at Marshall after going undefeated in doubles. Eddins is a teaching prof in Huntington, W.Va., and is a former volunteer coach at Marshall.
Saunders and Shumway replaced the Middle States Region champion duo of Nathan Healey and Veronica Corning in Wednesday's round of 16 match after the duo withdrew from competition.
