NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma senior Ryan Rohlinger (3B) was the first Sooner selected in the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft, which began on Tuesday, June 6. The West Bend, Wisc. native was picked in the sixth round, at No. 176, to join the San Francisco Giants’ organization.
Rohlinger, who leads the 2006 Sooners in batting average (.377), home runs (12) and ranks second in RBI (63), was recently named the most valuable player of the 2006 NCAA Norman Regional on Monday. The third baseman was selected in the 21st round of the 2005 Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Senior Daniel McCutchen (RHP) followed Rohlinger in the 13th round, 404th overall, after being picked up by the New York Yankees. Tuesday's selection marked the fourth time in the Norman native's career that he had been drafted by a MLB team. The Sooners' ace leads the Big 12 Conference with 138 strikeouts in 2006 and is 9-8 this year with four complete games.
Last year, McCutchen, who ranks fifth on OU's career strikeout list with 282 and earned the victory in the Sooners' regional title game against Wichita State on Monday, was selected in the 12th round by the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2004, The Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose him in the 28th round and in 2003, the Yankees selected him in the 27th round.
Besides the two current Sooners drafted, three signees, who are scheduled to join the team in 2007 (Chad Lee, Devin Shepherd and Teddy Hubbard) were drafted on the first day.
Lee, a right-handed pitcher from Barton C.C. in Great Bend, Kansas, was taken in the fourth round by the Oakland Athletics. Lee (6-3, 190) is originally from Oklahoma City.
Shepherd (Agoura Hills, Calif.) was selected in the fifth round by the Minnesota Twins and is considered by some as the one of the best prospects at the outfield position in the country. Shepherd (6-4, 230) played at Oxnard High School in California.
Hubbard, another right-hander, is from Hooks High School in Hooks, Texas. Hubbard (6-4, 215) was selected in the 12th round by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Day two of the draft continues on Wednesday, June 7 at 11 a.m. A live draft tracker is available at MLB.com.
