NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma women’s golfer Ellen Mueller beat Ashley Medders 3 and 1 on Wednesday during the first round of match play at the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at the par-72 Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass. Mueller advances to compete in the round of 32 on Thursday.
A junior, Mueller held a one-hole lead over Medders through the 10th hole. Medders, from Alma, Ga., birdied the par-3 11th, squaring the score. The pair remained all square through the 13th hole before Mueller won the 14th, 16th and 17th holes to win the match.
“So far I haven’t struck the ball my greatest this week,” Mueller said. “Hopefully things will turn around. With my putting, I haven’t made a lot of birdies but I look forward to making more of those this week. I’m still getting comfortable with the greens, so tomorrow hopefully they’ll start falling.”
Mueller qualified for match play Monday and Tuesday by firing a two-round 148 (+4), which tied her for 28th place out of 156 golfers. Incoming OU freshman Taylor Schmidt recorded a 36-hole score of 157 (+13) during stroke play competition. Schmidt missed the cut for match play by five strokes in her first U.S. Public Links appearance.
Mueller, who stands third on OU’s all-time stroke average list (76.23), will tee off Thursday at 7:06 a.m. CT against Brittany Altomare of Shrewsbury, Mass.
