Sooners Split to Close Out Tourney

HOUSTON – After taking the second set against No. 13 Florida State, the University of Oklahoma volleyball team was unable to complete the comeback as the Seminoles (5-1) defeated the Sooners (4-3), 3-1 (18-25, 25-19, 18-25, 16-25) at the Houston Invitational.

Suzy Boulavsky had 13 kills and senior Francie Ekwerekwu hit a team-best .400 with 10 kills and three block solos to lead Oklahoma. Boulavsky hit .375 and Sallie McLaurin connected on six of her 12 kill attempts.

Maria Fernanda led the Sooners with 19 digs. Brianne Barker recorded another double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs. Caitlin Higgins also added double-digit digs with 10.

As a team, OU hit .232 but the Seminoles hit .323. Visnja Djurdjevic had 15 kills for Florida State and Rachael Morgan had 14. Duygu Duzceler (28) and Patricia Figueriredo (22) led the Seminoles in the assists category. Three FSU players had double-digit digs and Marija Milosavljeic had six block assists.

Oklahoma travels to Fayetteville, Ark., Tuesday evening for a 7 p.m. CT matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Four Sooners tallied double-digit kills, led by Boulavsky’s 14 as OU downed tournament host Houston, 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13) on the second day of the Houston Invitational. Barker dished out a season high 51 assists and had a career-high four service aces. Fernanda paced the defense with 22 digs.

Freshman Cortney Warren had a season-best four total blocks, including two block solos. As a team, OU hit .265 and held the Cougars to a .169 hitting percentage.
