TULSA, Okla. – Senior Andrei Daescu and junior Ionut Beleleu advanced to the second round of the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships main draw after defeating two highly-ranked opponents Thursday.
“The guys fought hard,” said head coach John Roddick. “All-in-all it went really well.”
Daescu started out the day in a Red River showdown against Texas’ Dimitar Kutrovsky. Kutrovsky, No. 6 nationally, took the first set 6-2, but Daescu was too much in the end. Daescu won the second set, 7-6, and took the third set, 6-2, to claim the victory.
“The first set Andrei really got it taken to him,” said Roddick. “He battled back and won a really tough tiebreaker and really put the hammer down in the third set.”
Like Daescu, Beleleu needed to go three sets to get the win over Balazs Novak of Ohio State. Beleleu dominated the first set, 6-0, but dropped the second, 6-3, to the No. 45 player nationally. The third set went down to the wire but the Sooner was too much in the end as he won the set, 7-6.
“Johny (Ionut Beleleu) played another great match,” said Roddick. “He went out there really relaxed and put the points together when he needed to.”
The sixth consecutive day of tennis proved to be too much for freshman Costin Paval. Paval dropped his first match of tournament to the nations No. 15 ranked player, Bradley Klahn of Stanford. Klahn won the match 6-1, 7-5.
Tomorrow the Sooners take on a pair of top-40 opponents. Beleleu will take on North Carolina’s Clay Donato (No. 16) at 11 a.m., while Daescu will battle Jamie Hunt (No. 37) of Georgia at 12:30.
