NORMAN, Okla.-  The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team stands in 13th place after the first 18 holes of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.  The Sooners were led by Kendall Dye, who heads to round two in a three-way tie for first place after a tournament-opening 72.

After a front-nine 36, Dye was two-under through 15 holes, but closed with another 36 on the back side. The Edmond, Okla., native sits tied with Indiana's Laura Nochta and TCU’s Valentine Derry.

“I am very pleased with Kendall’s first round, but I know she is disappointed because she was two-under with three holes to go,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson.  “It was a difficult day with the wind, but she played very solid.”

Freshman Brooke Collins fired a first-round 78 (including a 37 on the front nine) and stands in a share of 29th.  A stroke back was Staci Smoot in a tie for 37th.  Sophomore Ellen Mueller and junior Andrea Sellmeyer are both tied for 67th place after carding a pair of 83s, while junior Chelsey Collins, Brooke’s older sister, rounded out the team scoring with an 85.

“We made some mental errors around the greens and really need to pay more attention to club selection and decisions,” Ludvigson said.  “Overall, we really struggled, but the team’s attitude was awesome. We want to pick up at least 10 shots tomorrow.”

The Sooners return for the second day of action in Puerto Rico starting Monday at 8 a.m.
