NORMAN, Okla.   The Oklahoma men’s tennis team (17-3, 2-3) closes out its regular season home schedule Wednesday, April 20, against Bedlam rival Oklahoma State (17-5, 4-2) at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla. The match time is scheduled for 5 p.m. and admission is free to the public. OSU leads the Bedlam Series 38-31, and no current Sooners have ever beaten the Cowboys during regular season action.

Wednesday will also be the final home match of the season for seniors Ondrej Fukala and Silviu Tanasoiu. Fukala owns a stellar 16-1 singles record and is 3-1 in Big 12 play. Tanasoiu has a spring record of 12-4 and an overall record of 23-7 in singles.

The Sooners are currently 9-1 when playing on their home courts, while OSU is 8-3 away from home. The Cowboys sport a national ranking of 14 and has two players among the nations elite in singles. OU is ranked No. 42 and boasts three players in ITA singles rankings including Fukala, sophomore Marek Velicka and junior Alexei Ivanov.

Out in front for Oklahoma is 43rd-ranked Velicka. Velicka has won five matches in a row and owns a spring record of 16-4. Velicka defeated OSU’s 35th-ranked Mark Van Elden in the fall during the ITA Singles and Doubles Championships, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, to claim the championship title. Two weeks later the pair faced off again, this time Van Elden came out on top by defeating Velicka 7-5, 6-2. The two will likely match-up at the No. 1 spot during Bedlam action in Norman.

Oklahoma last met Oklahoma State in the fall at the ITA Region V Team. The Sooners entered the playoff as a No. 3 seed but lost to second seeded OSU, 4-1. OU scored first winning two of three doubles positions, but couldn’t keep that momentum in singles action. Prior to the fall, Oklahoma faced the Cowboys twice in the spring of 2004. Oklahoma State swept the Sooners 7-0 in and 4-1 in the two meetings.
