NORMAN, Okla. -- OU freshman Ben Blundell is the early leader at the 17-team CordeValle Collegiate at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif., after shooting a course-record-tying 65 Monday.  The Rowlett, Texas, native had six birdies, an eagle and a bogey, finishing the morning round at seven under par.

Blundell takes a one shot lead over Northwestern’s Dan Doyle into afternoon play. The round was the lowest for an OU freshman since Chris Cureton shot 65 in the final round of the 1999 Red River Classic.

This marks the second consecutive tournament that Blundell has climbed near the top of the leaderboard. At the Oklahoma Intercollegiate (Oct. 15-17) Blundell was tied for second through two rounds after carding a second-round 69. He finished in a tie for third.

“I am extremely proud of the way he hung in there,” said OU men’s golf coach Jim Ragan.  “To be 6-under par through seven holes and keep the nerves away shows amazing poise for a freshman.”

Blundell’s round began with a hole-out eagle at the 390 yard par-4 14th.  The freshman’s fast start continued with a birdie at 13 and a stretch of three consecutive birdies at 15, 16 and 17.  After back-to-back pars, Blundell birdied the par-3 second and followed up with his final birdie at the 540-yard par-5 sixth.  His lone bogey came on his 17th hole of the morning, the par-4 ninth.

Lamar, ranked eighth in the nation in the latest Golfstat rankings, is the team leader after the first round, recording a 280 (-8) to stay one stroke ahead of Stanford. Three of Lamar’s opening round scores were under par. OU is 11 shots out of the lead after posting a team score of 291 (+3).  The Sooners team score was five shots better than their previous season low of 296, shot in the second round of the Oklahoma Intercollegiate.

Senior Nick Sheedy, playing in his first team tournament for the Sooners this season, sits in 31st place after an opening-round even-par 72. Freshman Jesse Schutte carded a 76 and sits in a tie for 70th. Junior Phillip Bryan is tied for 82nd after shooting 78 (+6) in round one. Pepperdine transfer J.J. Wood rounded out OU’s first-round scoring with a seven-over-par 79.

The second round of the tournament will start this afternoon. The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday morning.
