NORMAN, Okla. -- The NCAA announced Sunday that the University of Oklahoma was selected as one of 16 sites for next week’s NCAA Regional. The 2006 Norman Regional begins on Friday, June 2, with two opening round games and could run through Monday, June 5 at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
This season marks the third time in the history of the OU baseball program that it has been chosen to host an NCAA Regional in Norman (1975 and 1977), but first at L. Dale Mitchell Park, which opened in 1982. On three different occasions, the Sooners have hosted a regional in Oklahoma City and last hosted one in 2004 at the Bricktown Ballpark.
“The coaching staff is extremely proud of our student athletes and their efforts towards gaining this regional for the University of Oklahoma,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. “We also appreciate the efforts and leadership shown by our administration to help secure this opportunity.
“This was a dream and goal of the 2006 team in the fall before the season started and now that it is secured, we look forward to our next goal of getting to Omaha. Our team saw signs of what a regional atmosphere in Norman could be like when we played in front of a packed house versus Texas and Rice at L. Dale Mitchell Park this season and hope our fans will turn out in similar fashion during next week’s action.
The No. 13 Sooners (40-19) finished the 2006 season with a 21-6 mark at L. Dale Mitchell Park. In the two prior NCAA Regional appearances in Norman, OU finished with a 5-3 record and advanced to the 1975 College World Series where it finished with a 2-2 mark.
All-session tickets for the Norman Regional will go on-sale online at Soonersports.com, beginning at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 28. Because of Memorial Day weekend, the OU Athletic Ticket Office, located at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, will only be open on Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and those interested in purchasing tickets can stop in or call (800) 456-4668.
Oklahoma fans are encouraged to purchase tickets before the entire NCAA 64-team field is announced on Monday, May 29 at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN and NCAAsports.com.
Along with Oklahoma, a pair of other Big 12 teams -- Texas (40-19), Austin, Texas and Nebraska (42-14), Lincoln, Neb. -- will also be playing host to regionals next weekend. The remaining 13 regional hosts include: Alabama (41-19), Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Arkansas (38-19), Fayetteville, Ark.; Cal St. Fullerton (41-13), Fullerton, Calif.; Clemson (46-14), Clemson, S.C.; Georgia (41-19), Athens, Ga.; Georgia Tech (45-16), Atlanta; Kentucky (42-15), Lexington, Ky.; Mississippi (39-20), Oxford, Miss.; North Carolina (45-13), Chapel Hill, N.C.; Oregon St. (39-13), Corvallis, Oregon; Pepperdine (39-19), Malibu, Calif.; Rice (49-10), Houston, Texas and Virginia (46-13), Charlottesville, Va.
