NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma men’s gymnast Jamie Henderson qualified for the 2005 Visa U.S. Championships late Saturday night at the U.S. Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Visa U.S. Championships are scheduled for August 10-13, in Indianapolis, Ind. The event will determine national champions in respective events and who will represent the U.S. in international competition.
Henderson qualified for the August event after finishing fourth in the all-around with a score of 51.600. It was the second-straight year that Henderson has finished fourth at the event. In 2004 he finished behind three gymnasts that had previously qualified for the U.S. Championships and went on to finish 21st at the event.
“Jamie had a decent day,” said OU head coach Mark Williams. “He had an early mistake on the pommel horse, but all the way around though, he did pretty good and we look forward to him competing in August. We are excited to have three gymnasts competing at the U.S. Championships.”
Henderson will join two other OU teammates, Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons and U.S. Senior National Team member Jonathan Horton , at the U.S. Championships. The two sophomores had qualified for the event in previous action.
Horton and fellow sophomore Jacob Messina were also in competition in Saturday night’s action. Although Horton had already qualified for the U.S. Championships and was using the competition for practice, he did win the floor exercise. Messina in his first action at the U.S. Senior Qualifiers finished 12th with a score of 48.200, but did not advance to the U.S. Championships.
