Sooner Wrestling Dazzles Fans At Red/White Classic

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma wrestling team held its annual Red/White Classic Friday night at the Howard McCasland Field House, where the White team won by a score of 26-11. This match will be used to help determine starting positions for the upcoming season.

"This was a great crowd tonight and I am very impressed with how our team looked at this early stage of the game," said head coach Jack Spates. "There were lots of bright spots tonight. Rafael Maturino did a great job tonight. We knew that Teyon Ware was capable of what he did and we know that Nate Parker is a good wrestler."

"We still need to get sharper and get in better condition, but that will come with more matches. This is the first time under the lights for our guys and they did very well. I'm very proud of the job that our guys did tonight," said Spates.

Eighth-ranked Bo Maynes began the evening against freshman Sam Hazewinkel. Maynes decisioned Hazewinkel by a score of 7-2. Oklahoma's third-ranked Witt Durden, a two-time All-American, recorded a major decision, 18-5, over freshmman Luke Metzler.

Sooner fans witnessed a battle at 141 pounds. Freshman Teyon Ware decisioned, 10-6, returning All-American Nate Parker in one of the most anticipated matches of the night. Sophomore Matt Grice put the Red team on the board when he scored a major decision, 16-8, over Beau DeArmon. Junior Rafael Maturino pinned junior Mark Worthy at the 2:29 mark to extend the White team's lead.

The White squad received another boost when 165 pound sophomore Wes Roberts defeated Randy Sulaver by major decision, 13-4. Wyoming transfer E. K. Waldhaus pulled off a 9-3 decision over freshman Matt Steel at 174 pounds.

Preseason favorite Josh Lambrecht won the 184 pound contest over freshman Justin Dyer by a 6-0 decision. Senior Tom Grossman added the final points to the Red team's count with a major decision, 11-3, over sophomore Joel Tapler. Oklahoma's heavyweight battle between Erin Helvey and Tom Ward was the last weight of the night. Ward ended the match as the victor with an 8-5 decision over Erin Helvey.

Oklahoma's next action will be the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic on Nov. 16 in Brockport, N.Y.
