FULLERTON, Calif. – The ninth-ranked University of Oklahoma softball team opened Saturday play at the Judi Garman Classic with an 8-5 win over No. 16 Louisiana-Lafayette. The Sooners (22-7) pounded out 13 hits en route to the win over the Ragin’ Cajuns (14-5).
Oklahoma put the first run on the board in the top of the second inning. Lindsey Vandever singled to the shortstop and scored on Chana’e Jones’ double to left center. Jones then scored on Wendy Trott’s single through the right side. Dani Dobbs reached on after being hit by a pitch and Evan Sallis singled to the pitcher to load the bases. Krystle Huey then hit a blooper that landed in shallow right field to score Trott and Dobbs. Huey moved to second on a throwing error by ULL. Amber Flores singled to right field to score Sallis before the inning ended.
The Sooners added another run in the top of the fourth inning when Huey scored on a ground out by Samantha Ricketts. Amber Flores also doubled down the right field line in the frame.
OU starter Allen Allen had her perfect game broken up in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff single through the right side by Katie Smith. Smith then advanced to second on an OU error that saw Karli Hubbard reach first on a fielder’s choice. Allen then hit Melissa Verde to load the bases with no outs. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored their first run when Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Codi Runyan.
The Sooners put two runners aboard with one out in the top of the sixth inning when Sallis walked and Huey singled up the middle. Flores walked to load the bases and Ricketts was hit by a pitch to bring in Sallis and leave the bases full with one out. After a strikeout, a wild pitch scored Huey.
ULL came to life in the bottom of the sixth when Hubbard singled up the middle and Verde walked to put two on with no outs. Runyan then hit into a fielder’s choice, placing runners at the corner with just one out. Allen then issued a walk Christi Orgeron to reload the bases. Gabriele Bridges then hit her sixth home run of the season over the right field fence to score four runs and bring the Ragin’ Cajuns to within three. Pinch hitter Erikka Murphy lined into a double play to end the inning.
Huey led OU, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two driven in. Sallis, Flores and Trott also had a multiple hit game, each tallying two on the day. Flores went 2-for-3, driving in one run. Flores was issued one walk on the day. Sallis was 2-for-4, scoring two runs and Trott was 2-for-4, scoring one run and driving in one run.
Allen threw her fifth complete game this season, allowing three hits and five runs, four of which were earned. She walked three and struck out five.
Donna Bourgeois (11-4) picked up the loss for Louisiana, allowing all eight earned runs by Oklahoma.
