NORMAN, Okla. -- The 28th-ranked Oklahoma women’s golf team fired a 36-hole total of 584 (+8) Monday at the 15-team Central District Invitational and is in first place at the par-72 River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla., with one round remaining.
After shooting a first-round score of 291 (+3) in the morning, the Sooners carded a 293 (+5) in the afternoon and lead second-place TCU by two shots and third-place Vanderbilt three strokes. Ten of the 15 competing teams are ranked in Golfweek’s top 50.
“We played solid today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “I’m really proud of the way we fought and kept our rounds together. We are exactly where we want to be heading into the final round. Ja played great, it was good seeing her be herself again on the course.”
Drouin was referring to Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil, who led Oklahoma in each round and holds the individual lead by five shots over Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex and TCU’s Sanna Nuutinen. The Sooners’ sophomore fired a first-round 68 (-4), tying her collegiate career low. The round included eight birdies and four bogeys. Jao-Javanil followed with a bogey-free 2-under 70 in the second round. She is attempting to win her second career tournament (she captured the Golfweek Invitational title in September).
OU sophomore Jade Staggs recorded a two-round total of 148 (+4) and stands in a tie for 18th place among 75 competitors. Staggs, who shot a 2-over 74 in each round, bogeyed just two holes on the second 18.
Sophomore Anne-Catherine Tanguay is tied for 25th place after carding a two-round total of 151 (+7), while junior Taylor Schmidt and sophomore Emily Collins are both in a tie for 33rd place after each registered a two-round total of 146 (+7).
The Sooners will tee off in their final round of the Central District Invitational Tuesday morning. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com.
