NORMAN, Okla. – Five University of Oklahoma volleyball student-athletes have been honored as postseason awards recipients, as announced today by the Big 12 Conference. Seniors Brianne Barker and Suzy Boulavsky earned All-Big 12 First Team honors, senior Carlee Roethlisberger was named Newcomer of the Year, sophomore Sallie McLaurin earned Defensive Player of the Year and was named honorable mention All-Big 12 and Tara Dunn was named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.

It is the second consecutive first team honor for Barker and Boulavsky. McLaurin earned Freshman of the Year honors last year. McLaurin is the first Sooner to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors since Eliane Santos in 2006. Roethlisberger is the second OU player to earn Newcomer of the Year accolades, following Cathy Cook in 1999.

“It’s special for our seniors to be recognized,” said Oklahoma head coach Santiago Restrepo. “They have great leadership. For Carlee to be named Newcomer of the Year is special since she’s been with us just this one year. Sallie is very well deserving of Defensive Player of the Year. She’s done a tremendous job of shutting down opponents. It’s also great recognition for Tara, and we’re excited to have her for another three years.”

Barker commanded OU to a .245 hitting percentage this year and averaged 10.40 assists per set. She was second on the team with 3.03 digs per set. Boulavsky led the Sooners with 3.28 kills per set, hitting .291 on the year. Boulavsky averaged 0.77 blocks per set with 93 total.

Roethlisberger hit .300 on the year, averaging 1.65 kills per set. She was second on the team in blocks with 74 total, including 12 block solos for a 0.83 per set average. McLaurin led the Big 12 in blocks on the year, averaging 1.35 per set. McLaurin dropped 25 block solos and 132 block assists during the regular season.

Dunn was second on the team and in the top 10 in the league with 2.92 kills per set. She also averaged 1.58 digs and 0.52 blocks per set.

The Sooners face in-state rival Tulsa in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship. The two teams face off Friday, December 2 at 7 p.m. CT at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. No. 7 national seed Southern California is the host and faces Yale in the other opening round match at 9 p.m. CT. The winners of Friday’s matches play the second-round match on Saturday, December 3 at 9 p.m. Saturday's winner advances to the Honolulu Regional.
