NORMAN, Okla.-- Senior Marek Velicka and junior Federico Chavarria will be teaming up to compete in the qualifying tournament of the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All American Tennis Championships Tuesday Oct. 3 in Tulsa, Okla.
The qualifying rounds consist of 64-doubles teams who will be competing for a seat in the main draw. Velicka and Chavarria were the sole Sooner duo to be admitted to the tournament.
In singles competition, three Sooners competed in the pre-qualifying rounds Saturday but were eliminated. Sophomore Sergey Avdeyev suffered a loss to Irving Morales of Troy (2-6, 6-2, 1-6). Freshman Ondrej Kacmar was defeated in the first round by Texas’ Rook Schellenberg, 4-6,2-6, who went on to win a seat in the qualifier. Chavarria, who received a bye in the first round, was defeated in the second by James Clow of Nebraska (2-6, 4-6). Clow also went on to win a seat in the qualifier.
Velicka will be the only Sooner remaining in singles competition for Oklahoma. He was admitted to the main draw and will begin play Thursday Oct. 5.
Velicka and Chavarria are scheduled to face Jakub Cech and Rudolf Siwy of Fresno State. Live scoring of the match will be provided on www.tulsahurricane.com. Results will be posted on www.SoonerSports.com as soon as they become available.
