NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's soccer team won for the first time on its new field as it defeated Alabama, 2-1, in front of 187 fans Sunday afternoon. Junior forward Jonette Coquat and freshman midfielder Heidi Martinson each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Sooners (3-3) back to the .500 mark.
Oklahoma got on the board 22:37 into the game when Martinson scored her first goal of the season off an assist from Coquat. The two combined on OU's second goal as well when Coquat netted her third score of the year off a Martinson pass at 55:31.
Alabama (3-3) made a game of it when it scored late in the second half, at the 88:28 mark. Tiffany Carle scored on a header off a Melissa McGee pass, but the Sooners were able to hold on.
Sooner goalkeeper Jana Cunningham earned the victory while saving four shots. She improved to 1-2 on the year. Alabama goalkeeper Tasha Denecke totaled 10 saves.
Despite the close score, Oklahoma dominated the Crimson Tide, registering 26 shots and 12 shots on goal. Coquat and freshman forward Logan Womack tallied seven and five shots, respectively.
"We still have the problem of not finishing our shots," said Oklahoma Head Coach Randy Evans. "We should have never been in that situation late in the game. However, I was impressed with the speed of our frontline and our ability to constantly put pressure on Alabama. The forwards stepped up today and took some relief off the midfield and defense, who were exhausted from the SMU game on Friday."
Oklahoma plays UW-Milwaukee next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the OU Soccer Complex, located at the intersection of Imhoff Road and Chautauqua Avenue (directly west of the Lloyd Noble Center), and TCU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
