April 19, 2005

This Week in Sooner Tennis:
The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team prepares for another busy week and will try to extend its four-match winning streak as it returns to conference play to take on Oklahoma State and Colorado. The Sooners take on state and Big 12 rival OSU on Wednesday, April 20, at the OU Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and admission is free.

Oklahoma then faces the Buffaloes on Saturday, April 23, at the CU Boulder South Campus Tennis Courts in Boulder, Colo. at 11 a.m.

The Cowboys carry an overall record of 17-5 into the match, while the Sooners are 17-3. Oklahoma State also sits at second in Big 12 standings with a 4-2 conference record, while OU sports a 2-3 record in league play. Oklahoma State has won seven of its last eight matches. Colorado owns a 8-13 record and are 1-4 in Big 12 action.

Last Time Against Oklahoma State:
OU last faced OSU in the ITA Region V Team Playoff in October. The thrid seeded Sooners lost to the second seeded Cowboys, 4-1. OU started off well by winning the doubles point, but couldn’t keep the momentum in singles action. Prior to last fall, Oklahoma faced Oklahoma State twice in the spring of 2004. The Cowboys beat the Sooners, 4-1 in the Big 12 Tournament and OSU swept the Sooners in Bedlam action in Stillwater, Okla., but OU forced four of the six singles matches to three sets. OSU leads the Bedlam series 38-31, however the Cowboys have beaten the Sooners 10 consecutive times. Oklahoma looks to snap OSU’s winning streak and upset the 15th-ranked team. Leading the way for the Cowboys is 35th-ranked Mark Van Elden.

Last Time Against Colorado:
In the last meeting between OU and Colorado the Sooners picked up a 4-3 vicotry. In the all-time series against Colorado, Oklahoma leads 36-15 but four of the last six matches between the two programs have been by 4-3 decisions.

Texas-Arlington Recap:
The Oklahoma men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to four consecutive matches and improved their home record to 9-1 by sweeping Texas-Arlington, 7-0, on Sunday.  In doubles, junior Tommy Garrison and senior Ondrej Fukala paired up at the top slot to defeat UTA’s Sandy Farquharson and Diego Mattar, 8-2. The pair improved their spring record to 13-3 and 19-8 overall.

Pushing his spring record to 16-1 and winning his seventh-straight match in less than an hour was Fukala. The 6-5 senior spark plug gave OU a 2-0 lead by dominating, 6-0, 6-0, UTA’s Niels Buksik at No. 3 singles. Following Fukala’s win, fellow senior Silviu Tanasoiu, Garrison and junior Lee Gregg wrapped up their matches to clinch the victory for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma On a Roll:
The Sooners enter the last week of regular season action against OSU and Colorado with a record of 16-3. Not since the 1963 season has OU recorded three or fewer losses in a single season, when the Sooners had a record of 12-3.

Sooner Hot Streak:
Junior Tommy Garrison extends his winning streak to 14 consecutive matches.  Sophomore Marek Velicka is also on a roll with five straight wins.

Senior Night:
Two Sooners play their last match at OU on Wednesday, seniors Ondrej Fukala and Silviu Tanasoiu. Fukala owns a 16-1 singles record and has won seven straight. Fukala’s only loss was to Baylor’s 19th-ranked Lars Poerschke in a hard-fought tie-breaker 6-3, 6-7(1), 1-0 (11-9). Tanasoiu owns a 13-4 singles record, going 7-0 verses regional opponents.
