IRVING, Texas – OU women’s gymnastics sophomore Kayla Nowak was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for March 1, announced by the conference Tuesday.
Nowak competed in the all-around in the Sooners’ 196.650-196.275 win over Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 26. Nowak was OU’s first all-arounder since March 12, 2010.
Nowak scored a career-high 39.375 at Michigan in the all-around, to finish in second place just .025 behind the country’s top-ranked all-arounder, Michigan’s Kylee Botterman, who scored a 39.400 last Saturday.
Nowak’s 39.375 is the second-highest all-around score by a Big 12 gymnast this season.
Nowak competed on vault for the first time this season at Michigan and scored a career-high 9.9 on the event to share the event title with teammate Sara Stone.
Nowak’s 9.9 on vault was her third score of 9.9 or higher this season and her 18th score of 9.8 or higher this year.
Nowak is currently ranked No. 7 nationally on floor. Nowak is also No. 2 on floor, No. 5 on beam and No. 7 on bars in the Big 12.
Nowak and the Sooners host their second quad meet of the season as OU faces No. 17 Illinois, No. 13 Ohio State and TWU on Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
Friday’s meet will be televised on Cox channel 3 and 703 in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa, with live commentary by Bart Conner and former OU gymnasts Hollie Vise and Julie Kramer.
Friday is “Year of the Fan” night at OU gymnastics. Fans in attendance will have a chance to win hundreds of dollars in giveaways as a thank you for their support. The first 1,000 fans will also receive a free “Year of the Fan” collectible pin.
