NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma track and field teams return to action this weekend at the Tyson Invitational hosted by the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Joining the 11th-ranked men’s team in the field is top-ranked Arkansas, No. 3 LSU, No. 13 Nebraska, No. 16 Kansas State, No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 19 Mississippi, No. 20 Iowa, No. 22 Georgia and No. 23 Auburn. On the women’s side, the No. 19 Sooners are joined by second-ranked LSU, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Arkansas, No. 5 UCF, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 13 Georgia and No. 24 Kansas.
Oklahoma has athletes competing in 26 events over the two-day meet which begins Friday at 1 p.m. CT and concludes Saturday afternoon with the men’s 4x400-meter relay at 3:30 p.m. CT.
Among OU’s competitors include six individuals and one relay team with top 25 times or marks in their respective event this year. Frezer Legesse, George Alex, Eric Harasyn and Riley Masters all run the men’s mile run Friday at 1:25 p.m. CT, while the men’s distance medley relay team runs Friday evening at 7:10 p.m. CT. OU’s DMR team of Harasyn, Ethan Baker, Legesse and Masters met the NCAA Championships automatic qualifying standard and ran the second best time in the nation last weekend, finishing in nine minutes, 30.13 seconds at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
Alex and Masters will run the men’s 3,000-meter run on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. CT. Malcolm Anderson has the 15th-best time in the men’s 60-meter hurdles this year. He runs in the preliminaries of that event on Friday at 5:35 p.m. CT. Karen Shump has the 11th best mark in the women’s shot put this year and she competes Friday at 2 p.m. CT.
In addition to Oklahoma’s participation in the Tyson Invitational, redshirt junior Tia Brooks competes in the USATF women’s shot put championship on Saturday at 5:15 p.m. CT. The meet features a 10-event professional lineup and is part of the nationally televised USATF Indoor Visa Championship Series. Brooks has the top collegiate and second-best American mark in the event this year.
In addition to the Tyson Invitational, OU has six athletes scheduled to compete at the Oklahoma Christian Indoor Invitational II on Saturday at the Mosier Indoor Facility in Norman. Those athletes include Nick Anderson, Christian Johnson, Tre Lathan, Seth Lewandowski, Alex Madkins and Nathaniel Winfrey.
Senior Jessica Engel also competes in the women’s 5,000-meter run on Friday at the Flotrack Husky Classic in Seattle.
