NORMAN, Okla. – University of Oklahoma senior right side hitter Suzy Boulavsky (Houston, Texas) and sophomore middle blocker Sallie McLaurin (Midwest City, Okla.) have earned the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The duo led OU to 2-0 record on the week with wins over then-No. 8 Texas and on the road at Texas Tech. Boulavsky led the Sooners with 3.70 kills per set and 40.0 points. She hit .360 on the week with just five attack errors in 89 attempts. She had a match-high 20 kills and hit .452 in the win over the Longhorns. Boulavsky added 17 kills at Texas Tech in the five-set win.
McLaurin led the Sooners with 1.90 blocks per set. She totaled 19 blocks, including 16 block assists and 32.0 points on the week. She had a match-high 11 total blocks against the Longhorns, including an OU rally scoring record 10 block assists. McLaurin was key in OU’s win at Texas Tech with 12 kills and eight total blocks, including two block solos.
This is the second career Offensive Player of the Week award for Boulavsky. She previously earned the honor on Oct. 19, 2009. McLaurin earned three Rookie of the Week awards last season. This is her first time being recognized as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. The pair bring OU’s weekly honorees to three this year. María Fernanda was last week’s Defensive Player of the Week.
The 22nd-ranked Sooners return to action Wednesday evening against Missouri at 7 p.m. CT at McCasland Field House. The match airs on a tape-delay basis Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 11 p.m. on Cox Channel 3 (703 HD) in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The game will re-air on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. CT. Sooner Sports Properties and Sooner Vision HD will put on the production with Toby Rowland, the voice of the Sooners, providing the play-by-play from Norman alongside color analyst Brandon Files.
