LUBBOCK, Texas — K.P. Singh broke his own program record in the hammer throw Saturday at the Texas Tech Open en route to winning the event and taking the Big 12 lead. Singh was one of three Sooner throwers to win a title at the event as Tia Brooks and Brittany Borman claimed wins in the shot put and discus, respectively.
Singh’s winning throw of 218-10 (66.70) won the event by over three feet and bettered his previous best of 215-6 (65.69). The throw is the fifth longest in the NCAA and the best in the Big 12. Singh, who entered the weekend ranked 11th nationally, defeated No. 5 Dimitrios Fylladitakis of UTEP, who finished second with a throw of 215-8 (65.75). The win is Singh’s second in as many weeks.
Borman claimed her first title of the season in the discus with a season-best throw of 180-10 (55.13). The throw is the second longest in the NCAA and is the Big 12’s longest throw by over five feet.
Oklahoma swept the top two spots in the women’s shot put as Karen Shump finsihed second behind Brooks. Brooks topped her classmate by over a foot with a winning throw of 56-9.50 (17.31) while Shump came in at 55-1.50 (16.80). Brooks’ throw is the second longest in the nation this season and the best in the Big 12 while Shump ranks third in the Big 12.
Conrad Aaron also recorded a PR as he finished second in the men’s shot put with a throw of 57-3.00 (17.45). The throw is over a foot better than his previous best of 56-2.00 (17.12) and is the seventh best in Oklahoma history.
Ben Latham improved his PR in the men’s javelin by over three feet as he took third with a throw of 197-0 (60.04). The throw is the seventh longest in Oklahoma history and betters his previous best of 193-8 (59.04).
