Women's Basketball Celebrates Banner Season

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's basketball team invites you to celebrate its banner season at this year's annual awards banquet on Saturday, April 8, at 5:30 p.m. OU will host the award ceremony at the USPS Housing Facility Conference Hall in Norman.

Fans may reserve seats for the event at $15 per person and $10 for children 12 and under by calling the OU Women's Basketball Office at (405) 325-8322 by Tuesday, April 4, 2000.

Head Coach Sherri Coale, who finished as runner-up for Associated Press National Coach of the Year, led this year's team to the NCAA Sweet 16, a share of the Big 12 Conference regular season title with a 13-3 mark and a school record 25 wins (25-8). Her team also set five school records and appeared among the school's all-time top 10 in 15 team categories. She also led OU to its first national ranking in five years.

The Sooners will also honor senior Phylesha Whaley and sophomores LaNeishea Caufield and Stacey Dales. Whaley was named to numerous All-America teams including the United States Basketball Writers Association, Women's Basketball Journal and Women's Basketball News Service first teams. She was also named to the Associated Press honorable mention squad. Whaley became Oklahoma's first conference player of the year and only the second Sooner to be selected to three consecutive All-Big 12 first teams. The Slaton, Texas, native became the school's all-time scorer when she recorded a game high 33 points in OU's 86-81 victory over BYU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Caufield and Dales were selected to the All-Big 12 second team, while ranking second and third, respectively, on the team in scoring.
