OU to Face Tech and No. 4 Baylor

NORMAN, Okla.The No. 28 Oklahoma men’s tennis team will travel to Texas for a two-match weekend against No. 42 Texas Tech University and No. 4 Baylor University. The Sooners will square off against Texas Tech Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Lubbock followed by a match against the Bears Sunday in Waco at noon.

The Sooners are 17-5 overall and 1-2 against Big 12 opponents. OU boasts two ranked freshmen (No. 62 Vaclav Kucera, No. 124 Andrei Daescu) and one ranked doubles tandem of junior Federico Chavarria and Daescu, who broke into the rankings after upsetting the Aggies’ No. 56-ranked duo of Bryan Wooten and Mike Beatty.

2007 has been a year of snapped streaks for Oklahoma as it broke into the top 25 for the first time since 1992 and claimed its first victory over Texas A&M University (6-1) since 1997. This weekend OU Head Coach Paul Lockwood looks to pick up his 300th career win.

The Raiders are 13-7 on the season and 1-3 in Big 12 play. Bojan Szumanski is Tech’s junior standout who is ranked No. 42. The Raiders’senior Dmitrio Martinez (No. 104) broke into the singles rankings last week after he upset Baylor’s No. 16 Michal Kokta. In doubles tandems, Tech relies on No. 59 pair of Szumanski and Christian Rojmar.

Big 12 leader, Baylor, currently sits at No. 4 on the charts tied with Notre Dame. The tennis powerhouse is led by All-American No. 14 Lars Poerschke, No. 23 Michal Kokta and No. 102 Dominik Mueller. Baylor is also home to the No. 18 doubles duo of two-time All-American Matija Zgaga and sophomore David Galic.

“We look forward to facing two nationally ranked teams this weekend,” Lockwood said. “We have had a good week of practice and look forward to the challenge ahead.”
