TULSA, Okla. – Senior Andrei Daescu advanced to the Championship match of the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa, after defeating Kentucky’s Eric Quigley and USC’s Steve Johnson.
Daescu will take on John-Patrick Smith, the nations second ranked player, of Tennessee in the finals, Sunday, at 10:00 a.m.
In his first match Daescu took on UK’s Quigley. Earlier in the tournament Quigley defeated the nations No. 1 player in the country, Aleksandr Nedovyesov of OSU. Daescu won consecutive sets to take the match. He won his first match, 7-6, and took the second match, 6-3.
After defeating Quigley, Daescu set his sights on Southern California’s Steve Johnson. Johnson, the 18 nationally, played Daescu close but did not have enough to knock off the Sooners No. 1 player. Daescu took the first set 7-6 and repeated that score in the second set.
