Sooners Hope To Continue Success In Chicago

NORMAN, Okla. - Following a second-place showing at the Inverness Intercollegiate, the 23rd-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team continues its fall season next week when the Sooners travel to Chicago, Illinois for the 2000 Windon Memorial Classic. The tournament is being played at the Knollwood Club (par 72, 6,951 yards) and is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 2-3. Play is scheduled for 36 holes on Monday, with 18 holes to be played on Tuesday.

This will be Oklahoma's second trip to the Windon since the tournament's inception in 1993. The Sooners will be looking for some improvement after finishing last out of a field of seven teams in 1998.

The Projected Starting Lineup

Kelsey Cline (Sr., Yukon, Okla.) - Making the 36th start of his career at Oklahoma . . . finished tied for 19th at the Inverness marking his first top-20 finish since tying for 11th at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate last Spring . . . kept the Sooners in contention on the first day of the Inverness shooting a team-low score of 73 . . . shot a season-low round of 72 on the last day of competition . . . finished tied for 42nd at the Ridges Intercollegiate.

Cline's Career Numbers


Matt Cohn (So., LaJolla, Calif.) - His ninth start as a Sooner, Cohn tied senior Kelsey Cline to finish in 19th overall at the Inverness . . . it was his second top-20 finish of the season . . . has the lowest scoring average for Oklahoma this season (72.83) . . . led OU at the Ridges Intercollegiate tying for third at four under par (212) after shooting a final-round score of 72 . . . the only Sooner to make the cut at the 2000 NCAA Championships . . . finished tied for 38th shooting 287 in four rounds of play.

Cohn's Career Numbers


Martin Flores (Fr., Mansfield, Texas) - Making his third start for OU . . . recorded his first collegiate top-ten finish at the Inverness tying for 10th while leading the Sooners to a second-place finish as a team . . . shot a total of 223 to finish 10 over par at the Inverness and ten strokes off of the lead . . . made an impressive debut at the Ridges Intercollegiate Invitational finishing tied for 20th after shooting a score of 217 to finish one over par . . . posted back to back rounds of 71 in the first two rounds of The Ridges to lead defending NCAA Champion Luke Donald.

Flores' Career Numbers


Cody Freeman (Jr., Arnett, Okla.) - This will be his 14th career start for the Sooners and his first of the season . . . started in eight tournaments for OU last year and played in nine overall . . . best finish of the last season came at the NCAA Regional where he fired a final score of 207 to come in second place . . . finished tied for 17th at the Maxwell shooting a 219 . . . had a stroke average of 73.4 during the 99-00 season.

J.D. Robertson (Jr., Little Rock, Ark.) - Staring the 15th tournament of his career as a Sooner . . . started 10 contests last season and played in 11 overall . . .recorded three top-20 finishes in the 99-00 campaign . . . led the Sooners at the Maxwell tying for 11th with an overall score of 217.

Looking Ahead to the Red River Classic

The Sooners will be heading to Dallas, Texas on Oct. 9-10 to compete in the 13th Annual 2000 Taylor Made Red River tournament.

Of the 15 teams participating in this years contest, nine of them are nationally-ranked including Oklahoma. Others include No. 5 Houston, No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Texas, No. 13 Texas Christian, No. 19 Brigham Young, No. 20 Kent State, No. 21 Washington and No. 22 Southern California.

Oklahoma will be looking to improve on its eighth place finish from a year ago. J.D. Robertson was the top OU finisher shooting a score of 209 to tie for 23rd.
