Sooners Lose Tennis Playoff to OSU, 4-1

Norman, Okla.   The University of Oklahoma men’s tennis team was just one of four schools that advanced to the ITA Region V Team Playoff on Sunday, Oct. 31. The Sooners entered the playoff as a No. 3 seed but lost to second seeded Oklahoma State, 4-1, while top seeded and host Arkansas swept No. 4 seeded Tulsa, 4-0, inside Arkansas’ Dill Tennis Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Arkansas and OSU will face each other later Sunday with the winner advancing to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February, 2005.

OU scored first, winning two of the three doubles positions. Sooner sophomore Marek Velicka and senior Silviu Tanasoiu teamed up at No. 2 doubles for a tough 8-6 victory over OSU’s Mark Van Elden and Daniel Byrnes. Cowboys Boris Kuharic and Jaun Felipe Diaz took the second doubles match of the day, winning 8-5 over OU’s junior Alexei Ivanov and freshmen Federico Chavarria. Oklahoma’s No. 3 doubles team of senior Ondrej Fukala and  junior Tommy Garrison clinched the point for the Sooners by defeating OSU’s Tomas Bohunicky and Artsem Burmistrau, 8-5. 

In singles play the Sooners did not fare as well as OSU swept the top three singles position and claimed the match at No. 6 singles.

Velicka, ITA regional singles champion, faced OSU’s Van Elden at No. 1 singles. Velicka and Van Elden battled in the first set with Van Elden pulling it out, 7-5. The second set saw Van Elden keeping control by taking the set, 6-2, to win the match, 7-5, 6-2. Velicka pulled off the upset during the ITA Singles and Doubles Championships by defeating top seeded Van Elden, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, in Tulsa two weeks ago.

OU will conclude the fall portion of its schedule at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas on Nov. 5-7. OU’s opponent and match time is yet to be announced. All but one Sooner will be participating the TAM Invitational, Velicka will head to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete in the prestigious National Indoor Singles and Doubles Championships that same weekend.
