NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team will compete in its first tournament of the fall season Sunday, Sept. 10, at the 12-team Badger Women’s Golf Invitational in Madison, Wis. The tournament will be played on the 6,175-yard, par-72 University Ridge Golf Course. The University of Wisconsin will host the tournament.
The Oklahoma team will boast an experienced lineup for its season opener that includes junior Kelly Jacques, senior Jaclyn Stelzer , sophomore Kendall Dye, freshman Joyce Trus and junior Staci Smoot. Senior Megan Goodwin will compete as individual. The Sooners are not strangers to the University Ridge Golf Course. OU placed seventh out of 12 teams in the competition last fall.
“This is a tough golf course,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “It’s long. With our strength being off the tee, that will really help us.”
The two-day invitational will consist of 36 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, with the final 18 set for Monday at 8 a.m. Pairings for Monday's final round will be determined by score. The low four individual scores will determine the team score for each round.
Also competing in the Badger Invitational will be Nebraska (ranked No. 39), Louisville, Kansas State, Illinois State, Memphis, Georgetown, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Indiana and Minnesota.
“In looking at who is going to be there, I think we’ve got a lot of good head-to-head competition and I’m really excited about that,” Ludvigson said. “Definitely, we’re going in to win and for an individual win as well. Obviously, I’d be disappointed if we didn’t win. But if we finish in the top two or three, I think that would be a pretty good start. I think it is feasible, looking at how we’re playing and looking at our field, to be thinking about winning.”
The Sooners’ fall season will also include the Jeannine McHaney Invitational in Lubbock, Texas (Sept. 18-19 at The Rawls Course), the Women’s Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., (Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at The University of Michigan Golf Course) and the Price’s Give Em Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. (Oct.16-18 at New Mexico State University Golf Course).
OU will wrap up the fall schedule with a trip to the Kent Youel Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii (Oct. 24-25 at Kapolei Golf Course).
