NORMAN, Okla. --The University of Oklahoma baseball team came in at No. 28 in the preseason poll announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) on Tuesday.  OU is less than three weeks away from beginning their first full season under head coach Sunny Golloway.

The Sooners return 19 letterwinners (12 seniors) from last season’s 35-26 team, and is one of four Big 12 schools that were picked in the NCBWA preseason poll (No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Nebraska and No. 16 Missouri).  OU was also ranked in Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s top-40 preseason poll, coming in at No. 29.

OU ended the 2005 regular season with a 10-2 record under Golloway, then an interim head coach.  That team closed out the regular season as one of the hottest teams in the Big 12 Conference (fifth-place finish) and made the program’s second consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, a first since 1997-98.

“It’s great for our program to be recognized in another preseason poll,”  said Golloway.  “There is a lot of excitement and anticipation for this season to start.  The coaching staff and the players are ready to get on the field, start playing and continue the success we had at the end of the 2005 season.  We return a lot of experience from that team and a lot of our newcomers have the potential to contribute right away, so it should make for an exciting season.”

The initial poll of the 2006 season has representation by 10 different conferences and top independents among the 284 baseball-playing schools in the NCAA Division I ranks.  OU will square off against nine teams ranked in the poll for a combined 20 games.

The Sooners open the 2006 season at the Texas-Pan American Tournament in Edinburg, Texas, against Texas State on Feb. 3.  The opener is followed by contests against host UTPA and Lamar, Feb. 4 and 5 respectively.
