NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma gymnast Haley DeProspero was named an Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine on Thursday, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Van Alstyne, Texas, native was one of 15 athletes selected to the women's at-large third team. The accolade comes two days after former OU men's gymnast Russell Czeschin was selected to the at-large second team.
DeProspero completed her eligibility by leading the Sooners to their second straight Big 12 crown in 2009 with a repeat win on beam (2008 and '09). A four-time NACGC All-Academic Scholar and three-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection, DeProspero was named the MVP of the 2009 Oklahoma squad, an accolade voted upon by her OU teammates.
DeProspero joins former gymnast Brittney Koncak-Schumann as an Academic All-America honoree under OU head coach K.J. Kindler. Koncak-Schumann earned the coveted award in both her junior and senior seasons (2006 and 2007).
The recipient of the OU Athletic Director's Leadership Award in 2009, DeProspero will start classes at The University of Texas at Houston Medical School in the fall.
