SUGAR GROVE, Ill. The University of Oklahoma men’s golf team finished Thursday’s first round of the 54-hole NCAA Central Regional in 21st place at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill.
The Sooners posted a first-round team total of 320 (+32) at the 7,184-yard, par-72 layout.
J.J. Wood posted OU’s low round of the day with a 2-over-par 74. The Yuma, Ariz., native carded birdies at the seventh and ninth to offset two front-nine bogeys, making the turn at even par. The Pepperdine transfer found red figures after a birdie at the par-5 11th but moved back to level par after a bogey at No. 12. A birdie at the 13th was offset by a double-bogey at the par-3 14th. Wood added three straight pars before a bogey at the closing hole to finish day one in a tie for 10th at +2.
Senior Nick Sheedy and junior Phillip Bryan, the only players competing in the event from last season’s Big 12 Championship title squad, shot matching 81s in Thursday’s round. Bryan posted a front-nine 44 before recovering nicely, playing his final nine holes at one-over. The pair sit in a tie for 76th at +9.
Ben Blundell posted a round of 84, finishing the round in 107th place. The Rowlett, Texas, native carded a 6-over-par 42 on both nines.
Rounding out the OU scoring was Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Jesse Schutte who stands in 125th after a first-round 87. The Florence, Ore., native made the turn at +13 before he rebounded in playing his final nine holes of the day at +2.
Louisville leads the team standings after a 6-over-par total of 294, nine shot clear of Texas and Wisconsin as no team found red figures in the opening round.
Derek Fathauer of Louisville holds the individual lead after a 2-under-par 70. The Cardinal junior holds a one stroke lead over a trio of players that includes twin brother Daryl also a member of the Louisville squad.
The Big 12 Conference exhibited why it is one of the strongest conferences in the nation on Thursday with four teams in the top 10 and nine teams placing 21st or better.
Second round action will begin at 7 a.m. CDT on Friday. The Sooners are paired with Purdue and Wichita State and will start the second round off the 10th tee at 12:59 p.m.
The top 10 teams from the NCAA Central Regional, as well as the top two individuals on non-qualifying teams, will advance to play at the NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va.
