NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma men's gymastics team sent six members of its program to compete at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., and junior Daniel Furney represented the Sooners well by qualifying for a spot on the U.S. National Team in competition on Friday night.

"It feels really good to make the national team," said junior Daniel Furney. "I came in here with the idea that I was going to hit my sets and I did. While I was competing I heard them announce the rankings. Knowing where you are after each event kind of throws you off sometimes."

The New Braunfels, Texas, native scored a 9.400 on the vault, 9.000 on the pommel horse, 8.900 on the high bar, 8.800 on the rings, 8.700 on the parallel bars and a 8.350 on the floor en route to the top all-around score. Also qualifying for the national team was Cody Moore of UC-Berkeley.

"I'm excited for Daniel Furney," said OU head coach Mark Williams. "He has been doing so well on the collegiate level, I thought he would perform to the best of his abilities at the Winter Cup. One of his goals this year was to make the national team and he earned his place as one of the nation's best."

Other Sooners competing at The Sports Center in the All American Sports Park were freshman David Henderson, who notched a 51.200 all-around score, his best showing a 9.150 on the rings. Sophomore Heath Mueller scored a 49.500, scoring an 8.500 on both the floor exercise and vault. Competing in three events, junior Josh Landis scored a 9.450 on the pommel horse, a 9.350 on the floor exercise and a 8.100 on the high bar. Sophomore Jock Stevens notched a 9.300 on the floor exercise and a 9.000 on the vault. OU assistant coach, Guard Young, who was a member of the silver-medal winning U.S. National Team, competed on the floor and vault and scored 8.700 and 8.750, respectively.

The Sooners will be competing for Winter Cup all-around and event titles on Saturday, Feb. 9, beginning at 9:30 p.m. CST.
