NORMAN, Okla. -- Sophomore forward Whitney Palmer was selected to soccer’s All-Big 12 Second Team on Monday, as announced by the conference office and voted on by the league’s coaches.
Palmer started each of the Sooners’ 19 games in 2008 and finished as the leading goal scorer for the second consecutive season. The goal total was tied for sixth in the Big 12 at the end of the regular season and is the tied for the third most in OU single-season history. Four of Palmer’s goals came during conference play, a total that also led the Sooners and ranked in the top ten in the Big 12.
A member of the 2007 All-Big 12 Newcomer team, Palmer is tied for sixth place all-time at OU with 14 career goals and ranks fifth in game-winning goals (5). During her freshman season, Palmer led OU with six goals, including four game winners, when she played in 19 games with 18 starts.
The Plano, Texas, native is the first Sooner to lead the team outright in goals scored in back-to-back seasons since Jonette Coquat (1998-99) She is also tied for the second most goals scored by a Sooner in their freshman and sophomore seasons (14).
The last Sooner named to the All-Big 12 first or second team was Lauren MacIver in 2005 when she collected second team honors. Palmer is one of three Sooners in school history to collect Big 12 honors in multiple years, joining MacIver and Logan Womack, both four-time honorees.
Yolanda Odenyo (Oklahoma State) was honored as the 2008 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, while Kasey Moore (Texas) and Michelle Wenino (Colorado) were named Defensive Co-Players of the Year. Emily Cressy (Kansas) was chosen as Rookie of the Year and Colin Carmichael (Oklahoma State) took Coach of the Year honors.
