NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma vice president for intercollegiate athletics programs and director of athletics Joe Castiglione and head women's tennis coach David Mullins announced OU's 2012 spring schedule Wednesday.

OU, ranked No. 25 in the ITA preseason poll, will face 12 teams ranked in the ITA top 75 in 2012 including No. 6 Baylor.

“Our schedule continues to get tougher each year,” Mullins said. “With the improvements in the Big 12 these last couple of years I am expecting a lot of close, exciting matches in the months ahead.”

The Sooners open the season with a doubleheader in Norman against Drake at 9:30 a.m., and Arkansas-Little Rock at 1:30 p.m., at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

OU will play 10 times in Norman including conference home matches against OSU (March 3), Iowa State (March 23), Missouri (March 25), Texas (April 21) and Texas A&M (April 22).

Mullins’ squad opens its road schedule on Jan. 27 at the 2012 ITA Indoor Kickoff Weekend in Los Angeles against St. Mary’s.  OU will also see No. 22 Tulsa, No. 24 Arkansas and No. 30 Yale away from Norman.

“I was happy with the progress we made this fall,” Mullins said. “I am confident that progress will continue throughout the spring semester.”

The Sooners enter 2012 following their second consecutive NCAA appearance last season.  OU finished the season with the fourth-most wins in program history after advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for just the third time in school history.

OU finished third in the Big 12 in the 2011 season, its highest conference standing since 2004 when OU also finished third. The Sooners reached the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament for just the fourth time in history.

“We have had some great wins early in the season these last two years,” Mullins said. “I am hopeful that the girls will return ready to compete and be ready to play some of their best tennis in our first few matches.”
