Golfers in Seventh After 18 Holes

NORMAN, Okla.-- The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team is in seventh place after one round of play at the 17-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Sooners shot a 299 (+11) on the par-72, 6,000-yard Coco Beach Golf Course, 10 strokes behind leader TCU.

Junior Kelly Jacques leads OU after firing a first-round 72 (E) and stands in a fifth-place tie. Junior Heather Wright (75) is three strokes behind Jacques in a tie for 28th place.

"We feel really good about our start," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "We know that we can shave off quite a few strokes just around the green tomorrow."

Senior Megan Goodwin and freshman Chelsey Collins each shot a 76 (+4) and are currently in a tie for 33rd. Sophomore Kendall Dye, who is competing as an individual, stands in a tie for 45th after carding a 77. Senior Jaclyn Stelzer is eight-over par and is in a 72nd-place tie.

TCU's Valentine Derrey leads the tournament by two strokes after firing a five-under par in the first round.

"I'm really proud of the team's determination," Ludvigson said. "I'm also proud of how Chelsey (Collins) started her first college tournament. We are ready for tomorrow." 

The Sooners start second-round play Saturday at 9 a.m. CST. The field will begin the final 18 holes Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. CST.
