Key Returner: Tara Macdonald (So.) - Redshirted her freshman season but made eight starts in 2007 with two shutouts and a 1.19 GAA.
Key Newcomer: Lisa Jett (RS-Fr.) - Redshirted in 2007 at UCLA. Like Macdonald, she has good size (5-11) and athleticism for the position.
|Part I | 2008 Schedule | Roster | Newcomers|
Nelson on goalies:
"At the collegiate level, the best goalies are an extension of the back line and are good dealing with service, have a fearless mentality, are good with their feet and obviously have good shot-stopping ability.
"Tara and Lisa are both potential starters for us and the competition between them will only make them better. The position of goalkeeper is unique in that a mistake generally doesn't go unnoticed, so their confidence has to be exceptional."
Key Returner (s): Ashley Bolden (So.) & Katie Corbitt (Sr.) - Bolden proved to be one of the best young defenders in the conference last season and Corbitt has the experience
to lead the team in 2008.
Key Newcomer (s): Kelsey Kraft (Fr.) & Jordan King (Fr.) - Two of the OU's top recruits
are expected to help solidify the back line.
Nelson on defense:
"The defenders will have to be good one-versus-one and have a sound
tactical understanding of the game. They will play major role in our style of play
where attacking-possession will be the focus.
"They have to be comfortable attacking on the dribble, tackling and distributing the
ball after we regain possession. We are a bit inexperienced on the back line, but
have a nice mix of talent with our returners and newcomers."
Key Returner (s): Tiana Dickson (So.) & Kelsey Allison (So.) - Both gained valuable
playing experience as freshmen and will make transition to new positions in order to
balance the midfield.
Key Newcomer (s): Jordan White (Fr.) - Expected to immediately contribute to the offense's ability to score goals as a midfielder or forward.
Nelson on midfield:
"The key for our midfielders will be making a quick transition from defense to offense. We expect our defensive midfielders to maintain possession, cover a lot of ground and be good in the air, while switching the point of attack.
"The focus for our attacking midfielders is to penetrate opposing defenses and make plays from the middle of the field and into the final third. Technically, they need to be our strongest players."
Key Returner (s): Lauren Alkek (Fr.), Ashley Farrand (Jr.) & Whitney Palmer (Fr.) - The
talented trio will look to lead the offense in 2008.
Key Newcomer (s): Sage Coralli (So.) & Jordan White (Fr.) - Coralli comes from
Pepperdine where she was tabbed a top 100 recruit and started six games and White brings versatility to the scoring attack.
Nelson on offense:
"We have explosive and athletic speed, which is something you cannot teach. Its also
very hard for the opposition to defend. Success at this position is obvious - score goals.
"Our players out wide need to beat defenders one-versus-one and serve a quality ball to our central forwards, who will have to finish plays and get the ball in the back of the net. With Ashley, Lauren, Whitney, Sage and Jordan (White), among others, we believe we have the necessary components for a successful offense."
