Men's Tennis Ready for No. 1 Baylor

This Week in Sooner Tennis
The Oklahoma Sooner men’s tennis team begins Big 12 action against No.  1 Baylor. The Sooners will take on the Baylor Bears at the Baylor Tennis Center in Waco, Texas at 6 p.m.  on Friday, March 18. Oklahoma will then continue action in Norman with a double header against SMS and East Central Sunday, March 20 at 12 p.m.

The Sooners enter the match against Baylor with a record of 11-0, while the Bears have a season mark of 13-0 and are currently ranked 1st in the most recent ITA rankings. Baylor also owns a 2-0 record in the Big 12 Conference.  The SMS Bears currently own a 3-4 spring record, while East Central is 3-2.

Last Time Against Baylor 
Oklahoma last faced Big 12 opponent Baylor in 2004. The Bears defeated the Sooners 6-1.  The Bears own a series record of 7-1 over OU since the inception of the Big 12 in 1997.

Last Time Against SMS
The two programs last met in 2004 resulting in a 6-1 win for the Sooners. Oklahoma owns a 16-1 series record against Southwest Missouri State while under the helm of head coach Paul Lockwood.

Last Time Against East Central
The Sooners dominated the Tigers, 7-0, last spring. OU won all the matches in straight sets.

ORU and WSU Recap
Oklahoma swept Oral Roberts, 7-0. The Sooners remain strong in doubles, sweeping all three positions. OU won five of the six singles positions in straight sets.

OU dominated Wichita State, 7-0. The Sooners earned a hard-fought doubles point by winning two of the three positions. In singles, the Sooners fought hard to hold on to the lead with junior Lee Gregg defeating  WSU’s Thiago Santos 7-6, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot.

With the two wins over ORU and WSU the Sooners are currently 4-0 verse Region V opponents.

Sooners Record 
The Sooners have produced the best start in school history with an 11-0 perfect record this spring.  Prior to this season, OU’s best start was last year’s 2004 squad that started off the season at 9-0. In addition to the best start ever the Sooners are looking to break the longest winning streak in school history.  OU is six wins shy from tying the 1982 squad’s streak of 17. 

Singles Studs
Three Sooners are undefeated in singles play. Seniors Ondrej Fukala and Silviu Tanasoiu are 9-0 on the season, while Freshmen Ryan Thomas is 3-0. In doubles play, Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison have a perfect record of 7-0 at the No. 1 spot.

Sooners Find Doubles Success
Oklahoma has not lost a doubles point this season. At the No. 1 spot the duo of senior Ondrej Fukala and junior Tommy Garrison own a flawless 7-0 record, while the pair of senior Silviu Tanasoiu and sophomore Marek Velicka have a spring record of 8-1 at the No. 2 position.  Junior Alexei Ivanov and freshmen Ryan Thomas have teamed up to earn a stellar spring record of 7-1.

The Sooners might find some competition in SMS’s 42nd ranked duo of Jiri Spousta and Pavel Hanek. Spousta and Hanek have compiled a 6-1 record after defeating Arkansas’ 27th-ranked Matt Roberts and Imraan Ismail, 8-6, and Tulsa’s 41st-ranked Aleksander Charpantidis and Achim Roth, 9-8.
